Teen Parent Services (TPS)

Teen Parent Services (TPS) is a program for you that encourages and assists you to stay in school. We want to help you to get your high school diploma or GED so that you can become self-sufficient.

TPS in Kankakee County is operated by the Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS) and is part of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) employment and training program. Direct services for TPS are provided through the Kankakee County Health Department.

DHS requires enrollment if you are:

  • 19 and under
  • receiving TANF cash benefits
  • without a high school diploma or GED
  • pregnant and/or a parent (single or married)

You are eligible to enroll if you are:

  • age 19 and under
  • receiving KidCare insurance/medical card
  • in school to obtain a high school diploma or GED
  • pregnant and/or a parent (single or married)

TPS offers you many benefits:


  • helps you set and work towards goals
  • offers incenives/rewards as you take steps toward reaching your goals
  • provides education on topics that interest you such as parenting, communication, careers, and family health
  • helps you get medical care for your children
  • assists you with applying for child care payments through referrals to Child Care Resource Services

TPS expects you to:

  • attend class in pusuit of a high school diploma or GED certificate
  • meet monthly with your case manager from the health department
  • attend periodic workshops
  • provide monthly school attendance verifications
  • set and review goals toward self-sufficiency.
